On June 4th, 1937, Sylvan Goldman made history, rolling out the world's first shopping cart at his Humpty Dumpty supermarket chain in Oklahoma City. The invention didn't catch on immediately. Men found them effeminate, and women found them suggestive of a baby carriage. "I've pushed my last baby," an offended woman told Goldman. After hiring models to push his new invention around the store, however, shopping carts became extremely popular and Goldman became a multi-millionaire.

Twister depicts a group of storm chasers during a record outbreak of tornadoes in Oklahoma. Three Oklahoma City television meteorologists, Gary England from KWTV, Jeff Lazalier who was then at KFOR-TV, and Rick Mitchell who was the Chief Meteorologist at the time for KOCO, all appear as themselves on the movie's local television news reports.

Every year, Honobia hosts the Bigfoot Festival & Conference, a three-day gathering nestled in the heart of Oklahoma's densely wooded Kiamichi Mountains. In 2000, Honobia was itself the site of an alleged Bigfoot sighting known as "The Siege of Honobia," during which a local family was reportedly terrorized by the creatures.

The long-held notion that the Red River is the legal border between Texas and Oklahoma is more perception than reality nowadays. Over time the river has shifted its banks with erosion and silting and jumped its banks during floods. Land on one side of the river has often ended up on the other side, with pockets of Oklahoma existing in many places south of the river, and pockets of Texas existing north of it.

The world's first parking meter, known as Park-O-Meter No. 1, was installed on the southeast corner of what was then First Street and Robinson Avenue in Oklahoma City on July 16, 1935, inspiring immediate debate over the pros and cons of coin-regulated parking.

In northwestern Cimarron County, Black Mesa reaches 4,973 feet (1,516 m), the highest point in the state of Oklahoma. The plateau that formed at the top of the mesa was once home to Plains Indians and is considered one of North America's "geological wonders".

The Indian blanket (Gaillardia pulchella) was approved as Oklahoma's official state wildflower in 1986. The lovely red flowers with yellow tipped petals bloom along Oklahoma's roadsides from May to August, symbolizing the state's scenic beauty as well as the its Indian heritage.

The sale of cookies as a way to finance troop activities began in December 1917, five years after Juliette Gordon Low started Girl Scouts in the United States, when the Mistletoe Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, baked cookies and sold them in its high school cafeteria as a service project.

Boise City was the location of an unusual event during World War II when it was mistakenly bombed by a friendly U.S. bomber crew during training exercises. The incident occurred on July 5, 1943 when the pilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber became disoriented and mistook the lights around the town square as his target. Fortunately, no one was killed in the accident. Only practice bombs were used, and the square was deserted at the time.

The town of Stilwell, Oklahoma has held an annual strawberry festival for 60 years to celebrate this delicious fruit and the farmers who grow it. Delaware, Louisiana, and North Carolina also recognize the strawberry as a state symbol.
