Storybook Island is an 8 1/2 acre admission-free family theme park featuring over 100 storybook and fairytale settings, including favorites such as Humpty Dumpty, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Peter Pumpkin Eater. It is not an actual island.
Art Alley, located between 6th and 7th, and Main and Saint Joseph Streets in Rapid City, emerged as an organic, community gallery in 2003. In the beginning artists hung largely canvas artworks on the walls, and over time, evolved to painting directly on the walls.
The largest sector of the Rapid City economy is government services, including local, state, and federal. Major employers include Ellsworth Air Force Base, home of the 28th Bomb Wing flying the B-1B long-range bomber; the Army National Guard based at Camp Rapid and hosting annual exercises in the Black Hills; and various federal agencies, including the National Park Service, US Forest Service, and Indian Health Service.
