The Shag is a type of swing dance that originated on South Carolina beaches during the 1930's and 40's. The Shag is a descendant of the Jitterbug, and its predecessor, Little Apple.

The first report of Messie came from one Gilbert Little of Irmo, SC, in 1933. Little claimed to have spotted the creature while boating on the lake with his family as a child, stating that if he had known of an aggressive aquatic creature in residence in Lake Murray then he would never have gone near the water. Another notable encounter occurred on April 3, 2012, when two boys, Gray and Li Ward, were fishing on the lake when a large animal bit Gray's line and reportedly dragged the boat over a mile across the lake.
