In 1937, the company was founded by Kiichiro Toyoda to create automobiles. It was a spinoff from his father's company, Toyota Industries, originally a manufacturer of automatic looms.
1986 marked the company's debut as a manufacturer in the United States, with the rollout of the first Toyota car built on American soil. The vehicle, a white Corolla FX16, was produced on Oct. 7, 1986, at the New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. plant, a joint venture with General Motors.
From September 1947, Toyota's small-sized vehicles were sold under the name "Toyopet". However, when Toyota entered the American market in 1957, the name was not well received due to connotations of toys and pets. The name was soon dropped for the American market, but continued in other markets until the mid-1960s.
