"My sister's name is Hennessy," the rapper explained to talk show host Jimmy Fallon. "So everyone used to call me Bacardi, and I started calling myself Bacardi," which eventually was shortened to Cardi B.

The 2019 Vogue cover, photographed by Annie Leibovitz, features Cardi B in a red and white Michael Kors dress and matching red Jimmy Choo shoes, while holding her daughter, Kulture.

To escape poverty and an abusive relationship, she decided to become a stripper. "It really saved me from a lot of things," she says. "When I started stripping I went back to school."

In 2015, Cardi B joined the cast of the VH1 reality television series Love & Hip Hop: New York. The sixth and seventh seasons chronicle her rise to stardom and her turbulent relationship with her incarcerated fiancé.

Born on October 11, 1992, as Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar, Cardi B was born and raised in the Highbridge neighborhood of the South Bronx, New York. She is of mixed Caribbean heritage, her mother being Trinidadian and her father being of Dominican descent.

Cardi B plays Diamond in Hustlers opposite Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, and Lili Reinhart. The film follows a crew of strippers in New York City who begin drugging stock traders and CEOs who visit their club, then running up their credit cards.

Cardi B caused significant controversy after throwing one of her shoes at Nicki Minaj at an after-party hosted by Harper's Bazaar during New York Fashion Week 2018. She later stated that Minaj had "liked" comments made by other users on social media, who spoke negatively about Cardi B's abilities to take care of her newly born daughter.
