In 1970, Diane Crump rode a horse named Fathom, finishing 15th in a 17-horse field.
Under jockey Oliver Lewis, a colt named Aristides, who was trained by future Hall of Famer Ansel Williamson, won the inaugural Derby. Later that year, Lewis rode Aristides to a second-place finish in the Belmont Stakes.
Funny Cide was also the first gelding to win since 1929. He went on to win the Preakness and was third in a very muddy Belmont Stakes.
Arcaro tied the record for most Kentucky Derby wins, riding Lawrin (1938), Whirlaway (1941), Hoop Jr. (1945), Citation (1948), and Hill Gail (1952). Venetian Way (1960) won the Derby with Bill Hartack in the saddle.
