The Ballon d'Or ("Golden Ball") is an annual football award presented by French news magazine France Football to the male player deemed to have performed the best over the previous year. In 1964-65, Denis Law's 28 league goals made him the First Division's top scorer, earned him the Ballon d'Or award, and helped Manchester United win their first league title since the Munich disaster.

In February 2003, Ferguson went ballistic in the Old Trafford dressing room after watching his side crash out of the FA Cup against Arsenal. The Scot, not a man to get on the wrong side of, let rip at his players during their post-match inquiry and kicked a stray boot that caught David Beckham just above his left eye and required stitches. "It impacted their relationship," admitted Mikael Silvestre, a former United defender who was in the dressing-room when the incident occurred, "and was probably among the reasons why David left that summer and signed for Real Madrid."

On 7 May 1921, at 46 years, 281 days, Billy Meredith became United's oldest ever player when he took to the field in a league game against Derby County. A dedicated and extremely fit professional, his habit of chewing on a toothpick during games made him instantly recognizable.

A. H. Albut, is best known for being the first full-time employee of Newton Heath, the club now known as Manchester United. He was made club secretary in 1892 and, in that capacity, took responsibility for all team affairs. (No records were ever kept of who managed Man United in the years between 1878 and 1892.) Albut has been credited with keeping the club afloat during a lean financial decade.

Wayne Rooney scored 253 goals for United in all competitions to make him their top goalscorer of all time, with 183 Premier League goals being the second most scored by a player for any single club, behind Sergio Agüero (184 goals for Manchester City).

Ryan Giggs holds the all-time record for most appearances for Manchester United, playing in 963 games for the club between 1991 and 2014. Sir Bobby Charlton (758) and Paul Scholes (718) are ranked second and third in the list respectively.

The "Battle of the Buffet", also known as "Pizzagate", is a name used by the British press to refer to a Premier League match played between Manchester United and Arsenal at Old Trafford, Manchester, on 24 October 2004. Manchester's 2-0 victory ended Arsenal's record-breaking 49-match unbeaten run. In the tunnel after the match, tempers flared, and amid the brawl, a slice of pizza was thrown at manager Alex Ferguson, allegedly by Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fàbregas.

George Best was catapulted to superstar status at the age of 19 when he scored two goals in a European Cup quarter-final match against Benfica on 9 March 1966. The Portuguese media dubbed him "O Quinto Beatle", "the fifth Beatle" in English, and on the team's return to England, Best was photographed on the airport tarmac in his new sombrero with the headline, "El Beatle". Other nicknames included the "Belfast Boy", and he was often referred to as Georgie in his native Belfast.

In 1957, Manchester United became the first English team to compete in the European Cup, despite objections from The Football League, who had denied Chelsea the same opportunity the previous season. En route to the semi-final, which they lost to Real Madrid, the team recorded a 10-0 victory over Belgian champions Anderlecht, which remains the club's biggest victory on record. In 1968, ten years after the Munich air disaster, Manchester United became the first English team to win the Champions League, defeating Benfica in the final 4-1 after extra time at Wembley Stadium in London. And in 1998-99, after finishing the previous season without winning any titles, United became the first English team to win the Treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions.

The 1999 Intercontinental Cup was an association football match played on 30 November 1999 between Manchester United, winners of the 1998-99 UEFA Champions League, and Palmeiras, winners of the 1999 Copa Libertadores. Manchester United's 1-0 victory made them the first and only team from England and also the British Isles to win the Intercontinental Cup.
