On October 6, 2014, Ryan McDonagh was named the 27th captain in Rangers history, filling the vacancy left by Ryan Callahan the previous season. In his first season as captain, he led his team to the Presidents' Trophy.
In 1947, Buddy O'Connor was traded to the New York Rangers. He had 60 points that season, finishing second to Montreal's Elmer Lach in the scoring race and winning both the Hart Memorial Trophy as league MVP and the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship.

Gump Worsley set a franchise record in 1955-56 with 2,376 saves. Worsley was known for his wry sense of humour. Early in his career with the Rangers, regularly facing 40 to 50 shots a night, he was asked: "Which team gives you the most trouble?" His reply -- "The New York Rangers."
In 1986-87, Tomas Sandström had 40 goals, 34 assists, 74 points, and a franchise-record 4 hat tricks.
In his first year with the Rangers (1928-29), John Ross Roach had his best season, recording 13 shutouts and 21 wins with a GAA of just 1.41. He also led the Rangers to the Stanley Cup Finals, only to come up short against the Boston Bruins and their sensational rookie goaltender Tiny Thompson.
His dominating play during his rookie season resulted in the New York media and Rangers fans giving him the nickname "King Henrik".
In 1991-92, Brian Leetch combined 22 goals and 80 assists for 102 points, becoming the fifth defenseman in history, and the only American defenseman, to record 100 points in a season. He was awarded the Norris Trophy.
