At the 2003 Yankee home opener, Matsui hit his first MLB grand slam. He went on to hit .287 with 16 home runs and 106 RBIs during his rookie season, narrowly losing Rookie of the Year honors to Angel Berroa after two writers refused to include him on their ballots due to his age.
The origin of the name is derisive in nature, a reference to Matsui's skin problems early in his career, but has since come to represent his powerful hitting. He even made a cameo in the film Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla.
Sparky Lyle established himself as one of the best relief pitchers of the 1970s. He played a major role in the Yankees capturing three straight pennants from 1976 to 1978 and winning the World Series in the last two of those years.
