As the second overall pick in the 1991 draft, Pat Falloon will probably always be remembered as the 'consolation prize' since No. 1 pick Eric Lindros was easily the most coveted player available that year. Still, Falloon was considered a talented prospect in his own right, and the Sharks expected him to be one of the building blocks of their young franchise in the coming decade. He delivered decent returns as a rookie, notching 59 points in 1991-92, but never topped that production for the remainder of his career.
During the 2005-06 season, Jonathan Cheechoo led the NHL with 56 goals and became the first San Jose Sharks player to win the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy.
Link Gaetz only played 48 games for the Sharks before derailing his career with a drunk driving accident that nearly killed him, but he managed to set a franchise record, racking up 326 penalty minutes in a little more than half a season.
Cap Raeder is the only San Jose Sharks coach with a perfect record, winning his sole game as head coach on December 3, 2002, against the Phoenix Coyotes.
After a ten-game losing streak in 2005-06, the Sharks traded Brad Stuart, Wayne Primeau and Marco Sturm to the Boston Bruins in exchange for star player Joe "Jumbo" Thornton. The trade re-energized the team, and Thornton tallied 92 points in 58 games with the Sharks after the trade, finishing the season with a league-leading 96 assists and 125 points total. He was rewarded with both the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's Most Valuable Player and the Art Ross Trophy as the league's top scorer.
The Helicopter Line operated more like a helicopter than an airplane because it had no wings. All three players were career centres.
Larionov was known as "The Professor" because of his trademark glasses and his analytical approach to the game of hockey.
Joe Thornton began the 2006-07 season being awarded a permanent alternate captaincy, but struggled in the first half of the season while suffering from a toe injury that did not heal until January 2007. After recovering, Thornton enjoyed a productive second half, battling Pittsburgh Penguins Sidney Crosby for a second-consecutive scoring title late in the year, eventually finishing six points behind Crosby with 114.
